Artificial Intelligence an overview Guide to what is ai and how it has revolutionised technology

In the recent times, there has been an upsurge everywhere mainly with respect to developments in an ever growing industry of data science (DS from now on). You see that many companies have started to leverage the data they have been collecting or the one that they already had. Be it basic quantitative questions and understand the data or build predictive models to solve a particular business problem to develop Artificial Inteligence.

Also, the other point to observe is that a lot of startups these days are trying to solve problems using Artificial intelligence.

Before we dive into understanding some of the points mentioned above let me quickly tell you what I mean here by Artificial Intelligence. From now on in this series Artificial Intelligence refers to deep learning.

Lets get started………

So what AI that seems to have taken over the whole data world and how do people use them ? are some of the common questions that arise. I am writing this post with these questions in mind. Let’s dive in!

The basic principle behind ai is to mimic the functionality of neurons in the brain. Every neuron in the human brain communicates with other neurons. This allows for the transfer of information. The model is very simplified.

So does artificial intelligence have neurons? Absolutely ! they have neurons. These neurons also process information which is incoming data. Every neuron is assigned a particular task i.e a particular method by which they process data.

Moreover, the system consists of hundreds even thousands of neurons which process data. These neurons are arranged in layers. A neuron in one layer communicates with every other neuron in the other layers to finally produce ensuring a seamless flow of information between them. This network formed by layers of Neurons is called a neural network and is the building block of ai.

The sudden increase in popularity of this field can be mainly attributed to

  • The ability of these systems to approach highly nonlinear problems
  • The ease of use with the constantly improving technology
  • And the most important things is the availability of information i.e data

Let’s now look at some of the cases where Artificial Intelligence has proven its success and how learning.

1.Fraud Analytics:

I am sure you have heard of this. Growing use of credit cards also has seen growing fraudulent transactions. There are standard methods which are most popularly used to detect these transactions but Artificial Intelligence stands out in this space. It is able to identify the patterns which are very complex and nonlinear to predict if the coming transaction is fraud or not. This is very crucial for banks and businesses to minimize such transactions and Neural networks help to do the same.

2.Object detection from images:

This is another field where the use of artificial intelligence has become popular. Have you ever tried apps where they let you write on them but a typed text appears?

How do they generate this? Any guesses
The answer is AI. There is a model which runs behind these applications which are based on neural networks.

3.Translation of text from between languages:

This is probably one of the most important scenarios where the use of Neural networks has been beneficial. Can you guess where this is used extensively? ….. Google Translate. Absolutely, I leave it to you as a task to tell me which of the below you think is a human translation.

Note1) Kilimanjaro is a snow-covered mountain 19,710 feet high and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai “Ngaje Ngai,” the House of God. Close to the western summit there is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude.

Near the top of the west, there is a dry and frozen dead body of leopard. No one has ever explained what leopard wanted at that altitude.

4.Chatbots:

This probably changes the user experiences like never before. Right from OK google to SIRI to amazon Alexa. You talk and they reply. How do they know to interpret who is talking? AI is the key here. It has transformed the way we communicate. At times it is difficult to understand if it is an actual person or a bot.

Now that you have an overview what is AI, in the following posts I will help you understand the basic principles behind ai and walk you through building your own artificial intelligence application.

In the next post we will understand how deep learning works and get started with principles of deep learning
